Introduction
A warm, breezy and cloudy day greeted me as I arrived at Strines for today’s short walk.
Strines is in Stockport, but only about a quarter of a mile of the walk is in the Borough, between Strines Station and the B6101 road, where it runs into East Cheshire, along the southern Bank of the River Goyt, crossing into Derbyshire at Hague Bridge.
The walk is 4.5 miles with 630 feet of ascent.
It took 2 hours 15 minutes to complete..
The walk is OK for dog walking once you’re past the initial road sections, bbeing along a River Bank and through a country park, before another road section from New Mills to Brook Bottom.
I walked in an anticlockwise direction.
The walk is on OS Explorer Map OL1.
There is easy free roadside parking alongside Strines duck pond, postcode SK22 3AL, What 3 Words //suckle.witty.resonated

Strines And The River Goyt To Mousley Bottom
The duck pond in Strines is a picture postcard delight, adorned with coots and moorhens, and a dovecote housing a flock of jackdaws!

There was a lovely family of swans feeding there this morning.

I crossed the river, looking for dippers which are plentiful along here, but I saw nine today.

I joined the main road for about a quarter of a mile, enjoying views down to the river and up to the hills.

Before the road crosses the river, I took a path to the right, closely following the river edge, though the water was often concealed by trees.

At one gap in the trees I enjoyed a grey wagtail, bobbing along the rocks at the water’s edge.

A short road section took me across the valley floor, past a lovely grand farmhouse.

Hague Bridge took me to the Derbyshire side of the River and the access to Mousley Bottom.
Mousley Bottom And New Mills

Mousley Bottom is a pretty riverside nature park, but today I chose the high path, through the woods to New Mills.

If you’re ever at a loose end for a couple of hours, Park at Hague Bar car park, and walk through these woods to the New Mills millennium walkway and back deside the river – a great short stroll and definitely one for the doggies!
I walked up the road past New Mills Central Station and came to a town park, Lea Park, which I’d not seen before. Definitely one for the grandchildren, with lots of play equipment! And if you like flower displays, it’s one for you too! Amazing displays for mid-October.

Brook Bottom Road And Back To Strines
Brook Bottom Road traverses the hillside way above the River Goyt. Some eccentric householders live along the first section.

It affords fantastic views along the valley and even across the valley to The Cage at Lyme Park.

I even managed to spy Jordan and Delly’s old house rooftop away in the distance!

I arrived and the iconic Gox Inn, sadly too early for opening time.

From here, I made my way down the stony track through the woods, and back to Strines.

And back at the duck pond, I was pleasantly surprised to find the scans, moorhens and coots had been joined by a handsome male wigeon and a family of little grebes!

This is a cracking short walk in the best tradition of The Half-day Walker with lots of scooe to be extended if you have more time.
And Finally….
Songs From The Wedding Cake is the new chart topping album from Stockport’s finest, Blossoms.
This song is “Additional Driver”.
